How to Walk in High Heels ft. Charlotte Russe Wishlist

When I walked in my very first pair of five-inch wedges for the first time, I felt awkwardly clumsy like a baby deer on ice. It took some practice, but Im finally at that point where high heels dont intimidate me anymore. However, I know how terrifying and frustrating it can be to learn how to walk in heels so I have compiled a few tips that will hopefully make it less mortifying.

Before I do that, I have also come up with a little wishlist. I picked Charlotte Russe specifically because the shoes are cute and affordable.

Yes, these are all platform pumps because theyre my favorite kind of heels. They can also be one of the most difficult to walk in. So, how does one go about walking in high heels?

Confidence This is the most important tip to keep in mind. You may not feel confident in heels yet, but you need to fake it until you make it. Keep a straight posture. If you slouch, itll put too much weight onto your knees, making it even harder.

The right fit You want to buy heels that fit just right. If theyre too tight, they hurt. If theyre too loose, they slip off easily and make walking in them even harder. It could take a while to find that perfect pair for you, but when you do, youll love them!

Disperse weight You want to make sure that youre not putting all of your weight on your knees or your feet. Not only is this bad for them, itll hurt and also make it difficult to walk in heels. The key idea here is to hold even out your weight in your core. This sounds weird, but step as lightly as you can. This could take a while to nail, but the next tip will get you there in no time!

Practice As is with everything else, practice makes perfect. The more you walk in heels, the easier it gets. Take my word for it!

Do you have a favorite pair of heels? What are some ways you learned to walk in heels?

  1. Love this post! I'm still trying to hack walking in heels, I tend to opt for the wedges, so much easier!!

  2. oddly enough walking in high heels came rather naturally to me. I use to wear them in junior high and then they got higher and higher. By high school my heels were about 6 inches lol I needed something to take away from the school uniform!

  3. I went straight to the four inches for my first pair. Haha. I don't like shorter ones XD

  4. Yeah, wedges are definitely a lot easier and more comfortable to walk in. Its because your weight is dispersed throughout the wedge instead of concentrated on a thin, tapered heel.

  5. That is terrifying! I started with shorter heels and worked my way up. Practice does make perfect, though!

  6. I didnt get to anything more than two inches for a while, lol, but I agree that higher heels are more gorgeous!

  7. haha because it kinda made me have short legs because my legs are chubby that's why :) hehe yup!

At 26 years old I have pretty much given up on heels! I've spent more than one night hobbling around like a fool trying to keep it together on my feet! Good tip on dispersing weight!

  9. I stopped wearing heels for a while so I know what you mean by that, lol. Im getting back into it, though!

  10. I stopped wearing heels when I got pregnant with my first child. I hope to get back into wearing them from time to time. Although I have never worn much of a heel. Thanks for the tips!

  11. Love the supermodel print shoes! I think my balance has gone for wearing shoes this high, so I'll need to start practising it again.

  12. Back in the late 80s, when I took jazz dance classes in middle school, we wore high heeled jazz shoes, so I guess I got my start on heels early! We also wore high heeled tap shoes, come to think of it! Wearing heels just comes second nature to me now. That first pair of shoes you posted would definitely be something to get you noticed! Love that color.

  13. You know, I could never wear heels this high, though they are cute. My feet have gotten so flat over the years. Now I can only wear about 2 1/2 inches. But I rock them ;)

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yeah, some people can pull off shorter heels. Some people even look better in shorter heels. Im just unfortunately not one of them, lol. My legs look weird in shorter heels.

  15. Yeah, you did. I dont think I started wearing heels until high school. I was always in Converse before then. Thats great, though! The earlier you start, the more practice you get!

  17. It can be tedious to wear heels all the time so every now and then is when I wear heels too.

  18. I love the look of heels but I'm just too tall to really wear them... I'm 6 foot when I'm barefoot! Any suggestions on 2-3" classy black heels? I try not to be taller than my husband. :)

Thanks for the tips, although I rarely wear heels. I am already so tall and I don't like towering over everyone. Also, we farm and heels aren't always practical! :)

I was just thinking the other day that I wanted to get back to wearing heels more often. The first step will be buying some. :)

I don't wear heals. I prefer comfort. I'm a birkenstock girl myself, more so after I took my mother to have surgery for her bunion. Wearing tight fitting shoes will cause numerous foot problems. :)

I tore my calf a few years ago so I never wear heels. Ever. The best way to learn how- go on pointe. Once you dance on your toes, you can wear any kind of show.

  23. Practice is such a big deal, for sure. Somehow I have always felt super comfortable in high heels, I think because I have a high arch so I'm actually more clumsy in flat shoes than heels! But some of the super high ones with platforms get tricky, so I practice at home ;)

  24. ohhh I love this!! I'm definitely a heel junkie, I don't want to count how many pairs I have!! I'm wearing a pair today that I really love. They're a black/white snakeskin print with 5" heels. I love wearing heels because they make me feel sexy (even though I'm very simple) LOL I learned to walk in heels by just practicing around my house or even the office (I bring backup shoes just in case) :D

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh, I absolutely adore snakeskin print pumps!

  26. Yes, the shape of your feet plays a big part when it comes to wearing heels. Some people just physically cant because they have flatter feet.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ouch! Yeah, its probably best to stay away from heels, and I agree that its easier to walk in heels if you dance on your toes.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I can't wear heels anymore. Between not finding any I like in wide widths and my plantar faceitis I am a flats girl now.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Thats why its super important to make sure you have the right fit! :D

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thats my favorite part of wearing heels, lol. I love looking at shoes even if I wont wear them myself.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Heels definitely do not belong on the farm! Pointed heels would pretty much be impossible to wear on any kind of soil, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yes! Kitten heels! You would be the perfect height for them! Theyre usually one to two inches high, and if you can pull them off, they are super classy!

    ReplyDelete
  33. It can be difficult to find the perfect fit for any kind of shoe, really. I sometimes struggle with finding fitting heels too. ):

    ReplyDelete
  34. Platform heels would probably be a lot easier in walking. The ones you selected are really cute. I used to wear stilettos a lot. Now, I really LOVE platform Mary Janes best!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oooh, this makes me miss wearing heels. I used to wear them all the time before I got pregnant. Since having babies, though, I've been home with no reason to wear them. Sigh--someday!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I've tried many times to enjoy wearing them, and I just can't. Wedges are my comprimise - don't feel as vulnerable wearing them ;-)

I love my brown, leather 70's type heals with a chunky heel. I only wear them to church or for dress up/casual events. Otherwise I'm barefoot all the time. lol.

  38. I love those shoes..... I am 5.8 and love heels but I think these are way too tall for me......back issues and I probably would reach the ceiling...lol

    ReplyDelete
  39. I don't wear heels at all. I just don't. :) It's not my thing, and I have a hard enough time just walking a straight-line most days anyways, heels would totally be my downfall. :)

  40. Dawn Aldridge2/22/14, 7:10 AM

I can't handle anything more than a 3" heel, and at that height it has to be a chunky heel. I'm glad I don't have to wear heels everyday for work but it is fun to wear cute heels with jeans when I get the chance to go out with my husband.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I agree that heels and jeans are a cute combination! Its one of my favorites!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I LOVE heels...especially since I am 5 ft 4 (and a half)..I like feeling taller. I not only walk in heels very well...I run too..after my nephew...and I've walked my dog around the neighborhood wearing heels plenty of times...they do not bother me at all, and I feel really comfortable in them. One of the only places I won't wear heels...is Atlantic City...got a heel stuck in the Boardwalk before and almost broke my ankle. Lesson learned. Never again.

  43. Great visualization of a baby deer, because that is literally what I did when I walked in my first pair of wedges that were more than an inch high. I literally can't wear platforms though, I am already 5'8" and it just makes me feel like a giant. Confidence and practice are great tips though, you need both for sure.

    Always,

    Mostly Lisa

  44. I had that happen to me once before! In my case, it was a grate instead of a boardwalk.

  45. I've always told my daughters that if they want to wear heels when they're 40, they should wear them when they're in their 20s and 30s. I can't really wear anything more than a 2 inch wedge. I nearly broke my ankle trail running a few years back, and I'm definitely a wobbler on anything higher!

    ReplyDelete
  46. It took a lot of practice! Lol.

I have a few heels that I walk comfortably in, but I still kick them off at the first opportunity! Great tips, hopefully they will help :)

  48. Great tips! It took me a while to learn how to walk in heels and I still have to practice a little around the house before going out if I haven't worn them in a while. Confidence is definitely a key element! You have to walk the walk. ;-)

I agree, those 5" platform pumps are hard to walk in! I have to find the pumps that have the flat platform at the front, other wise I will fall! Something about the rocker, shaped platform at the front, makes it very uneasy when I'm walking! Your post inspires me to want to give them another try though!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Platform pumps with the rounded front scare me as well! I find them much harder to walk in because I always feel like Im going to fall, lol.

  51. Charity Lenfest2/26/14, 9:57 AM

I have a really bad sense of balance, so I never dared to try heels. I can barely keep from falling when wearing flats! :-) Good tips, though.

Oh my! Those are high, high heels! You are much braver than I am as I'd never even try those. Your tips are great, but I still don't have the courage. :-) ~ Bobbi

I used to wear high heels on occasions... but as I've gotten older, my feet have gotten fussier. Now I wear orthopedic shoes. Fortunately, these have improved dramatically over the past few years and I have a very cute pair of low heels from Taos and some supportive sandals from Orthaheels. I sometimes miss the look of high heels, but when your feet are happy, so is the rest of you....

    ReplyDelete
  54. I love high heels, but have avoided them for years because of comfort issues. I do agree you want to find the right fit to help, although some times finding the right fit can be just as tricky.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Yeah, the lack of comfort is my least favorite part of high heels. Even if it's the perfect fit, it can still get uncomfortable after an extended period of time. The trick is to always have an extra pair of comfortable shoes around, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  56. You have a great point. Whenever I have to be on my feet for a long period of time, I always feel horrible for the next couple of days.

I love walking in heels, but sometimes they can be so noisy. I saw a lady walking in the them the other day, and she was walking regular pace and completely silent. I was amazed.

    ReplyDelete
  58. That is amazing! I make so much noise when I walk in high heels, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I still haven't figured out how to walk in those super high heels!! You make it sound so easy!

I don't wear heels often anymore - though I used to and was pretty good at it! (If I do say so myself ) Your advice is all excellent. I'm more of a boot girl now, and flip flops in the summer of course!
