Are You Guilty of These Common Makeup Mistakes?

We have all been guilty of these common makeup mistakes at one point in our lives. I can confidently say that I used to do at least three items on this list. When I found out that I did them and learned how to fix them, it made my makeup look more natural and last longer. Hopefully this post can help you discover the same thing.

Do you skip skin prep?

It makes sense to want to skip skin prep. It shaves some time off your makeup routine. However this is an essential step. If you cleanse and tone your face, your makeup will go on easier and look better; a clean canvas is always easier to work with. Applying primer is also an important part of this step. Primers not only help your makeup stay on longer, they do other things too. There are primers that keep your makeup matte all day. There are primers that help with discoloration. There are primers that hydrate your skin. There are basically primers for everything.

My favorite primer is the Smashbox Iconic Photo Finish Foundation Primer.

Do you skip moisturizer?

Skipping moisturizer is also a good way to save time, but there are a few reasons to not skip this step. First, makeup goes on smoother on a moisturized face. If your skin is dry and chapped, putting on makeup will emphasize that. Second, makeup can dry up your face, and moisturizing your face beforehand can help prevent that. Third, you would want to take advantage of the SPF in moisturizer because the unrelenting Summer sun is very harmful to unprotected skin.

My favorite moisturizer is the Garnier Moisture Rescue Refreshing Gel Cream.

Do you have the wrong foundation shade?

I personally find this to be one of the most difficult parts of buying makeup, but it is crucial to not looking ridiculous. It is very obvious when your foundation is lighter or darker than your actual skin tone, so try a few of these ways to finding your perfect shade. Test your foundation on your jawline. If it blends in with your neck, congratulations! Sometimes it can still be difficult to tell on your jawline, so try testing it on your chest. The goal is to find a shade that blends in with your skin tone to the point where you do not see a line separating your foundation from your skin. Sephora also has a device, the Pantone Color IQ, that helps determine your skin tone. If all else fails, ask a beauty consultant!

My favorite foundation is the Rimmel Stay Matte Liquid Mousse Foundation.

Do you wear too much foundation?

If you wear too much foundation, it will look cakey and unnatural. Instead of piling on foundation to cover up blemishes, use foundation with higher coverage or use concealer. You can also put off applying foundation until you have your eyebrows and eyes done. That way you will feel like you need less. The type of brush that you use to apply foundation can also be a reason for wearing too much foundation.

My favorite brush is the ELF Studio Angled Foundation Brush.

Do you wear too much blush?

Blush is a tricky thing to nail down. You want to have enough to look like you are wearing blush but not so much that blush is the only thing people notice if that makes sense. Choosing a shade of blush is rather similar to choosing a foundation shade because you want your blush to match your natural glow as closely as possible. Once you find that perfect shade, you still have to make sure to blend, blend, and blend until the blush looks like it is coming from your skin.

My favorite blush is the Benefit Dandelion.

Do you apply mascara with a simple swipe?

This is one of the first makeup mistakes that I made. Who knew that there is a formula to applying mascara. If you simply one-and-done swipe your mascara, it would not work as well. Mascara takes at least two coats to really show results. Instead of simply swiping your mascara, start at the outer corners, press the wand underneath your lashes so that they actually get into the bristles, then slowly move the wand up in a zig-zag motion. This will more thoroughly coat your lashes. Keep in mind that the bulk of your mascara should be at the roots. That will make your lashes look fuller.

My favorite mascara is the Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes 4-in-1 Mascara.

Like I mentioned, I used to make some of these mistakes myself. Applying makeup is one of those things that take practice and experience. Hopefully this post helped you out as much as it did me when I first read about it.

What is the biggest makeup lesson that you have learned?
